After Cage performed his “4:33” in concert, the perception of what music is changed forever. Since his entire performance was him sitting at a piano for four minutes and thirty-three seconds, people understandably got mad. Why would you pay to go to a concert just to sit in silence for a bit and then leave? It makes no sense why anyone would do that. But then again, it was probably one of the first times that ever happened so the audience would not understand what was going on and what Cage was doing. But as people started to realize what was going on, he became an important part of music history. Saying that there is never a true silence during a performance and that the performance encompasses the entire environment. So the miscellaneous noises that the audience made were part of the

performance. This forever changed how people think about music because it showed that “silence” could also be a performance. Cage's life reflects an embodiment of the unusual and experimental. Such like his experimental work with “Music of Changes”, he was always breaking the definition of what music is. The randomness of “Music of Changes” showed that there did not have to be a standard melody of tempo to be music, but sounds themselves could be music just more Avant-garde. Cage forever changed music and now critics are realizing the importance of his discoveries in this field.
